What does tire tread actually do?

Tread, rubber compounds, and grip.

On pavement, the tread does less than most riders assume, this is because the contact patch of the tire is already maximized. On a normal, dry road, tread pattern has only a limited effect on how a tire rides — grip comes almost entirely from the rubber compound itself, not from the tread design. A bicycle also doesn't hydroplane the way a car does; the contact patch is far smaller and the contact pressure far higher, so the surface tension of water is not strong enough to break grip from straightline riding alone. In fact, on a smooth and wet surface a completely smooth (slick) tire actually grips slightly better than a similar tire with more tread, simply because more rubber is in contact with the road at once.


Off-road, tread matters enormously. There, the tread's job is to generate mechanical grip: knobs and lugs interlock with dirt, mud, and loose surfaces to transmit driving, braking, and steering forces the way the compound alone can't on an uneven surface. The entire purpose is to maximize the contact patch. A slick tire off-road offers drastically less control, and on rough or dirty pavement a good tread pattern also helps maintain grip and control even if you're not fully off-road (again, it's all about maximizing the contact patch, which in turn increases grip).


For road riding, prioritize the rubber compound over tread pattern. For anything off-road, tread pattern becomes increasingly important in loose and variable terrain.


Can grip be generated through a tires casing?


In addition to rubber compounds and tread patterns, grip can be increased through one other variable: A tires casing/carcass design.
Schwalbe has achieved this previously with the Turn Up Super Race Construction; a unique tire construction that results in less material under the tread cap, allowing for more flexibility and a greater resulting contact patch. Puncture protection is still maintained with a Raceguard of V-Guard layer under the tread cap. This casing is available in Touring, Road, Gravel, and MTB tires.

The latest development in bicycle tire casing design is the Radial Carcass.


What is radial?

Carcass threads at a more obtuse angle than comparative diagonal tires. This results in 30% more contact area with the same air pressure. Riders feel more grip, more damping, more safety.
