Tubeless sealant: how much, how to fill, when to refresh

Why you need sealant at all: Tubeless Easy tires aren't fully airtight on their own — the sealant is what makes the system airtight, more effectively than a solid airtight liner could. Older-style "true tubeless" tires that didn't need sealant existed, but they were noticeably heavier, and in practice most riders used sealant with them anyway.

How much to use:

• Tires 23-60 mm wide: 60-90 ml per tire
• Tires 62-100 mm wide: 90-120 ml per tire

Through the valve, or poured in directly? Both work. Filling through the valve (after removing the valve core) is the "cleaner" method, and it's a good choice if you're not sure the tire/rim combination will seal well, since the sealant only goes in once the tire is already locked onto the rim.

Pouring it in directly before seating the second bead is often faster for combinations you already know work well. If your valve doesn't have a removable core, direct pouring is your only option.

How long it lasts: Doc Blue stays effective for roughly 2,000 km or 2-7 months, depending heavily on temperature. After that it either dries into a rubber film or separates into solid and liquid components. Once the tire is sealed airtight, you don't strictly need to top it off — the ongoing puncture protection only works while there's still active liquid sealant inside, though, so we recommend refreshing it before a big event or a long trip.

A quick way to test if your sealant is still active: puncture the tire on purpose with a needle and spin the wheel. If the hole doesn't seal itself, it's time to refill.
Another less destructive method of checking sealant levels without de-mounting the tire is to rotate the tire so the valve is at the bottom, remove the valve core, and poke a thin stick through the valve. If the tip is wet after contacting the inside of the tire, the sealant is still fresh.
