Tire sealants: how they work and when to use them

There are two basic types of puncture-sealing liquid for tubes and tires:


Fiber/particle-based sealants work purely mechanically — small fibers or particles in the liquid physically plug a hole. They can stay effective in the tube indefinitely, but the plug isn't a permanent repair; it can work its way loose later, for example the next time the tire is inflated.


Latex-based sealants cure inside the puncture to form a lasting repair. The tradeoff is that latex sealant only stays liquid and effective for a limited time before it dries out.


Schwalbe's Doc Blue is latex-based and stays effective for roughly 2-7 months or about 2,000 km as a preventive measure. Particles suspended in the liquid help it seal larger holes quickly. Because of those particles, you need to remove the valve core to fill it — liquids thin enough to pour through an installed valve core generally can only seal very small holes.

In all cases, sealant only works while the wheel is rotating, since centrifugal force is what carries it to the puncture. A good, well-protected tire is still the simplest and most reliable solution for most riders.


Sealant is especially useful for tubeless and tubular tires, which are otherwise difficult or impossible to repair on the road. It's also a smart addition for very lightweight race tires (temporarily, for an event) or for touring through areas with heavy thorn hazards. In an emergency, it can repair a small puncture without removing the tube or tire — but larger damage like cuts or snakebite punctures won't seal with a latex-based product.
