Should I deflate my tires for air travel?

Generally, no — you don't need to fully deflate your tires to fly with a bike, and there's good reason to keep some air in them.


The core concern people worry about is that the pressure drop inside an unpressurized cargo hold could cause a tire to burst. In practice, this isn't much of a risk: airline cargo holds are pressurized to roughly the equivalent of 8,000-10,000 feet of altitude, which works out to a modest pressure differential — nowhere near enough to threaten a properly inflated bicycle tire.


A reasonable middle ground is to reduce pressure slightly — roughly 1-2 bar (about 15-30 PSI) below the tire or rim's maximum rated pressure, whichever is lower — rather than either leaving it at max pressure or deflating completely. That gives a comfortable margin without leaving the tire so soft that it can shift on the rim or fail to protect the wheel from impacts during handling and transit.


A practical reason to avoid full deflation: a completely flat tire doesn't hold its shape, which makes it easier for the wheel to get knocked out of true or for the rim to take an impact directly if the bike is jostled in the hold. Keeping meaningful air in the tire helps protect the wheel itself during handling, separate from any pressure-altitude question.


If an airline or ground staff specifically asks you to let air out, it's generally not worth arguing the physics — a partial deflation costs you nothing and keeps things simple.
