# Rotation arrows and direction-dependent treads

Most Schwalbe tire sidewalls carry a "ROTATION" arrow showing the direction the tire is designed to roll — mount it so the wheel turns the way the arrow points. Older tires sometimes use the word "DRIVE" instead, which means the same thing.

Some tires, like the [G-One RS](https://www.schwalbetires.com/Schwalbe-G-One-RS-PRO) and mark separate "FRONT" and "REAR" arrows, since the ideal tread orientation for braking and steering (front wheel) is often different from the ideal orientation for driving traction (rear wheel).

**Why direction matters more for some tires than others:**

On a road tire, rolling direction is mostly an aesthetic detail — a directional tread pattern is designed to look more dynamic, and getting it "backwards" won't meaningfully affect performance.

Off-road, it matters a lot more. The tread's job there is to interlock with the ground, and the front wheel's job (steering and braking) pulls in a different direction than the rear wheel's job (driving power to the ground). Because of that, some off-road tires are optimized for use on the front or rear wheel. 

Not every tread pattern is direction-dependent — some MTB treads are symmetric enough that rotation direction isn't specified at all.
